EcoNatura's Journey

Hi! My name is Jarelis. I'm 35 and I'm a certified artisan in oils and saponification ( which is the art and science of creating soap from scratch).

My journey started almost twelve years ago, in 2010, when I attended my first artisan & agricultural fair and discovered handmade soap for the first time. I bought my first bar in search of helping my mother's sensitive diabetic skin. She had ulcers and having very dry skin wasn't helping. Changing to a handmade soap made a huge difference on her skin, so her medications could do its job properly. ( Years later learned that soap doesn't cure any ailments but if you use the right one for your type of skin, your skin will thank you)

I became fascinated and as a full time caretaker of my mother I couldn't work a regular job. With the money gifted to me and my husband on our wedding day, I paid for a soap making class and started my neverending, continuous learning in the world of soapmaking. By 2012 I was certified by Fomento in Puerto Rico and later in 2014 became certified by Instituto  de Cultura Puertorriqueña.

Soapmaking has become a getaway  from very difficult life experiences. It has become more than a hobby to me. Everything that I continuously learn is so that you can have a wonderful, relaxing, self-care ritual in your everyday shower. A small getaway that you so truly deserve.

I hope my products, a small piece of me, brings your daily shower rituals the same feeling I get when I create them. Thank you for being here and taking the time to get to know us better!

Learn More About Handmade Soaps

There are a lot of  incorrect concepts about handmade soap, make an informed purchase:

Let us clarify some of them for you!

  • A lot of soapers claim handmade soap cure skin ailments. (cellulite, acne, hyperpigmentation, etc.)
  • There is no scientific  evidence that the properties of natural ingredients added to the product survive the saponification process.
  • Saponification is the process of making soap, adding lye (an alkali) to fats. The high ph levels of lye destroy most of these properties.
  • There is no way of making soap from scratch without lye or a caustic substance like sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. After saponification, lye isn't present.
  • Soap isn't a  leave in product so even if some of these properties did survive, we don't leave soap on our skin long enough to provide these benefits.
  • That being said, using the right soap for your skin will make a difference. How? If you use a soap formulated for gentle skin (higher oil contents or super fats) your skin will feel less dry. The opposite being for oily skin. So buying soap tailored to your skin type has it's  benefits, besides it smelling lovely and looking pretty.
  • Another plus of using handmade soaps is you know exactly what's in your product, no guesses on what the fillers are, like commercial soaps that tend to use synthetic detergents.
